Local farm keeps Thanksgiving tradition alive with heritage turkeys

This semester, I worked as an enterprise reporter covering the hard work behind Thanksgiving traditions in Suwannee County, Florida. I spent time on the Baum family farm, documenting their efforts raising heritage Bourbon Red turkeys — a breed with roots in the U.S. dating back more than 300 years.

I never imagined I’d find myself inside a turkey pen observing the dedication required to preserve both the birds and a piece of American history. Reporting this story gave me a deeper appreciation for local agriculture, family-run operations and the people who sustain long-standing traditions — all while navigating the challenges of a business that depends on patience, precision, and passion.

A little bit about me.
